Defining
El Niño
Growing up in
Honduras, a country which name etymology means profundity or for worst,
bottomless pit, I was barely twelve years old when I began to observe, to reason,
and to take a closer look at the climatic environment surrounding me. Living between two oceans in a two season
subtropical quadrant of the planet, anyone can easily detect and remember any
abrupt changes in weather patterns, more particularly when the temperature drops
dramatically where normally it shouldn’t.
It was in 1982, nearing Christmas that I remember feeling a strange
chill that filtrated to my bones, and which I cannot forget. I also reckon at
the time, hearing much in folk talk and in the radio about El Niño; however, I
had no concise understanding or clue of what they meant by it, and why there
was so much fear-mongering fuzz about it as if the world was coming to an end. Thus
having a firsthand experience with the phenomenon, even at early age, I
endeavored to understand El Niño by my own steam; and also, I ‘ve always wanted
to express my knowledge about it. I strongly believe that defining El Niño
accurately can help experts and scientist discover what causes the phenomenon.
And it can also help educate the world about how to understand El Niño much better.
As per The
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration hereafter referred only as
NOAA, El Niño and its counterpart La Niña, are two very distinct naturally
occurring climatological phenomena that take place, then, approximately every
four to six years, and now, every two to seven years. It is an anomaly in weather patterns that
affects the temperature of the equatorial oceanic waters, the trade winds and even
the atmospheric pressure. NOAA baptized el Niño as: “The El Niño-Southern Oscillation,” or
the “The ENSO cycle. Another nickname given to it by NOAA is “The Pacific Warm Episode.” The American Meteorological society or AMS in a compact converged the Enso
cycle it with “Madden-Julian oscillation,”
which is a similar climatological phenomenon. I prefer to call el Niño by what
it is or Cosmic Resonance Alternations Events, but who am I to know better? In essence,
their scientific terms mainly suggest changes in wind and variations in temperatures
and in the atmospheric pressure over the oceans, while my ramblings suggest that
and also cosmically generated differential noises from outer space mechanics
and from the earth’s internal thermodynamics. The main differences rely in the fact that
most experts study the principal effects or the symptoms, while I curious to
know the principal causes or its electromagnetic and thermodynamic factors.
Translated to
English or any other language, the term El Niño means The Child or The Little
Boy in reference to the birth of Jesus Christ, the child of God. NOAA indicates
that the name El Niño originated as in folk talk. Their combined articles also indicate
that term may have originated nearing Christmas during the 1600s, primarily in
the northwestern coastal waters of South America. It is implied by these
entities that fishermen used the name to describe abnormal increase in wind intensity,
and also an increase in the temperature over the surface of the oceans. However,
citing unconventional and independent sources, I have personally noted and can
point to at least 26 canonic scriptural references with hairy details that the
phenomenon תִּינוֹק, תִּינוֹקֶת may have existed anciently, even before the Israelite
Exodus. It was independently feared in both hemispheres. Selective religious texts
impress that it was known precisely as the “east wind” of destruction, famine,
pestilence or even “the wind of the Lord.” (Scriptures
/ LDS Church Search Engine)
Generally, the cosmic
alternating changes of the phenomenon l'Enfant
cause either excessive rains or prolonged droughts over vast land masses
along with other incidental thereto.
However, as of yet, despite being under observation and analysis for so
long, experts haven’t been able to pinpoint with exactitude the causes why, how
and when El Nino originates. In the simplest
terms, the world knows that when The
Little Boy is in number one mode, the sky gathers blackness and the clouds
cry pouring vast amounts of precipitation where it should not or where it is uncommon.
And when El Niño is in Schlemiel or
in number two mode, it leaves the rivers dry, the fishes and vermin thereof die
and stink for the lack of water. Having
briefly worked by a subsidiary of FEMA during national catastrophes like
Katrina and et al, I have seen eye to eye some of the profound effects of El
Niño. However, looking at the bigger picture, when El Niño is active, excessive
wind driven rain, intense flooding, soil reverberating erosion, landslides,
cropping failures, monstrous blizzards, and even devastating hurricanes and
other major important social, economic and existential changes take place and
affect us all. The Phenomenon of La Niña on the other hand, causes almost the
exact opposite effects. La Niña cycle brings droughts, famine, disease, crop
failure and all sorts of pestilences in addition to relatively dry winters.
Furthermore, one
impressive special characteristic of El Niño is that it often reverses the
direction of the trade winds at the equatorial tropics, hence, warming up the
surface of the oceans, increasing its moisture and affecting the atmospheric
pressure. La Niña on the other hand,
affects the Westerlies and Easterlies or the subtropical currents which result
in a noticeable drop in air temperatures from the poles towards the equator,
which in turn condenses and reduces moisture from the air. In sum, EL Niño
originates at the equator, but La Niña, only ends there. These are seemingly general or unimportant factors,
but which say much more of what we don’t know about EL Niño or La Niña than
what we think we already know. Simply stated, if we don’t know what El Niño truly
is, we may never know why and how it originates, neither where it comes from, nor
where it goes or when.
When I first read about
el Niño, I noticed it occurred about every four to six years, with a margin of
error of only about two years. Now that I have revisited the subject, as I
read, it appears the occurrence has widened from every two to seven years or
the gap in margin of error has widened to about five years. That is not an
improvement in prediction but a retrograde. Figuratively, it appears that El Niño has no apparent
mother or father, and therefore no one can pinpoint its exact birth or precedence. Since NOAA nicknamed it “The ENSO Cycle,” and since now El Niño is of age, they should talk
or at least try to listen to him instead of just watching it. Who knows, maybe
it will utter a syllabic oscillation or two? Or maybe we should ask first the planet
earth her opinion? I doubt not, and I know exactly what the Earth itself and what
the Little Boy would say in actual Lexicon, for it is already written. I cannot
write it all here. However, those who have
eyes to read can read it, in order of antiquity, by searching the scriptures
tab at the LDS web site and look for:
I am only
sarcastic but truthful to the teeth to emphasize the obvious. Oscillations
in the truest sense as the word indicates, are mainly types of magnetic
resonances or noises emitted when two or more bodies interact and there are
oscillations or magnetic friction or any other type of interaction between
them. I often read in their articles the
word cosmic, the word power, the word change or variation and most importantly
the fancy word oscillation. Put those
terms together and with a little observation instead of searching looking down to
earth one may end up with an answer just by looking up. If I had the time and the space, I could enumerate
tens of thousands of examples of just one of these terms that explain better
what an oscillations are or mean than what the expert intended to show or say
about it. The deliberate use of their terms without understanding all its
ramifications to explain a single or just a few of the symptoms mislead and alienate
not only our understanding about what they try to explain but it narrows in the
psych of most people the true parameters of the meaning of the word by marginal
association. Before they should title
anything deliberately, they should hire either an etymologist or even a
linguistics expert. The word translation
for instance, for most people it means just to translate something from one
language to another. Most Americans ignore that it also means the translation or
movement of planets around the sun such as their rotation and translation.
In conclusion, there is much that we still don't know about El Niño. Instead of a meager definition like this, I could have written a comprehensive dissection and dissertation. But as the old Ecclesiastes
proverb says in chapter 9 and verse 16, the wisdom of a poor man is overlooked
and his knowledge is not heeded. In many
cases, we are judged and made feel as offenders for a miss sqelled word or for nothing, but they refuse to be judged by us for a widely
misused or misunderstood term or even for their falsehood clogged minds. But for those Shakespearean idolaters of words
sons of the whore, the sorcerer and the adulteress as the Lords call them in
Isaiah 47 and 57, who ignore against whom they sport themselves and open their wide
mouth, the Lord God almighty under whose authority I am inspired to write, has
a pending, grim and stern warning for them all when he has said:
“And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness. And the meek also shall increase, and their joy shall be in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. For assuredly as the Lord liveth they shall see that the terrible one is brought to naught, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off; and they that make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of naught.”(Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 27:29 - 32)
However, describing
it in mythological terms, the father of El Niño is no other than Jupiter, and
its mother is Hera. The gravitational
and electromagnetic interactions of Jupiter and the Earth in conjunction with
the Sun every four years at perihelion and every six years at aphelion are what
causes the phenomenon El Niño. And if
there are variations in precision to predict it effectively, these can be
calculated from their distinct translation or elliptical paths around the sun
at two particular yet distinctive events. For as the threefold Occam’s razor theorem or parsimony
principle dictates: “Pluralitas non est ponenda sine necessitate,” (Encyclopedia Britannica Online)
As per the
Encyclopedia Britannica the Ockham’s razor theorem indicates, the same concept needs
not to be recited over and over again to make it true, or that the simplest
terms should be preferred to substantiate any given cause and effect. And also, that in all things being equivalent,
when we two competing theories make exactly the same claims or predictions, but
contradict each other, that the simpler explanation almost always tends to be,
if not the right one, the better. These
things I write in all solemnity, for better or for worst, yet I do it as one
having and under proper authority, in the sacred name of The Little Child, even
in the name of The Lord Jesus Christ, amen.
Attentively yours from an unworthy servant in the hands of Christ.
